There’s just so much to do…

vote librariesEveryLibrary California is going to be leading the fight to make it 11 percent easier for libraries to get funding in California. There are some potential amendments to the California Constitution to allow libraries and local jurisdictions to pass a tax measure by a more democratic 55% instead of the currently needed 66%. While the California Library Association fights for this legislation to pass in Sacramento, we are going to need to fight to ensure that it passes at the ballot box. It’s going to be a big fight and require a lot of work early on… In fact, starting now.

As we start to heat up the campaign and get ourselves ready for the next steps we’re going to need a lot of people, just like you, who care about libraries. We want to invite you to get involved in the campaign in a way that suits you and in a way that is effective and efficient. There are more than enough important roles, both large and small, that need to be filled by people who care and we are asking you to fill them.

canvassingCanvassing
One of the most important aspects of any campaign is the level of social capital that it has. Canvassers will work on this campaign by being in charge of a precinct or a turf and either go door-to-door, or set up tables and booths in high-foot traffic areas to talk about the campaign and libraries and have people sign up to support libraries. This is a great opportunity for library folks who are passionate about outreach!

Blogging
If you are good at writing we’d love to have you write short posts about libraries on our coming campaign/library advocacy website. We need dozens of articles about the importance and impact of libraries in a community. We need articles that highlight programs and services offered by California libraries. We need to get out of the echo chamber of librarianship and put big money behind promoting what libraries do for California through Google ads and sponsored posts on Facebook and other platforms. This is part of our advertising campaign and if you can’t write, you can help support it by contributing to it. You can read more of those details here.

Letters to the editor
We are putting together our editorial calendar for newspapers across the state. We are working on putting the message out to voters that libraries have an impact and are important to Californians. But, we can’t do this without passionate locals writing to their newspapers and local blogs to tell that story. If you have a story to tell, we need to make sure that people hear it.

Fundraising
If you are excellent at fundraising, want to host a fundraiser, become a fan fundraiser, or have a skill to offer in fundraising, you are going to become an integral part of the campaign. This campaign is going to require big money for voter awareness and education, consultants, lawyers, flyers and promotional materiasa, etc… Come and be a part of something great and raise the funding we need in the campaign.

vote libraries 1Designing
There will be design work required on just about every aspect of this campaign. We need to design flyers, brochures, and letters. There will be billboards and media ads across the state that will require the touch of an expert. Supporters will be wearing t-shirts designed by you at rallies and social events. If you have the design skills, we will need you.

Socials and Networking Opportunities
Are you good at bringing people together around a common goal? Just enjoy having people over or getting people out for fun? Socials and parties are a great way that we can get the word out about the campaign and libraries in a fun and social way. We’d love to have you organize socials, parties, and get-togethers around our campaign to talk about EveryLibrary California and the campaign while having a good time.

Presentations
Are you organizing a meeting of people who might be interested in the campaign? This could be a small conference, a webinar, a meeting, or just a few friends over for dinner. We’d love to come talk to your Friends of the Library groups, a community meeting, at your staff development day, or anywhere else you think that we can get the word out about the campaign. We just need you to let us know.

Let Us Know
Letting us know that you are interested in getting involved is easy. Just use the form below to sign up and let us know how you’d like to get involved in the comment area. We’ll add you to our planning group on FB and Google. If you don’t see something here that you might be interested in, but still want to get involved, we’d still love to add you to our planning groups and you can jump in when you see something that you’d be comfortable doing. There’s something for everyone to do at any commitment level and in-person or from the comfort of your own home.

Once again, we can’t do this without you. Don’t let this opportunity slip. If you don’t have time to help, please consider contributing $50 to the fight today.
